Is Online Learning Right for Me?

Online learning is convenient for the busy, working adult. This especially is true for the nursing health care professional who may be working different days or shifts from week to week. The advantage of taking "asynchronous" courses is that you don't need to be in a class, or even logged onto the computer, at a set time each day or week. Rather, you can work around your schedule, accessing and completing coursework at different times, even overnights or weekends. Plus, you can complete your studies from the convenience of your home computer without having to dress for school, drive to class, or arrange for a babysitter!

You may be wondering how online learning compares to face to face in a classroom. Certainly, you will save the time that would be spent commuting to school. Yet, research shows that online courses often require more actual study time for the student than comparable campus based classes. It also suggests that students are able academically to do as well as or better than their counterparts in the classroom.

In order to judge whether online learning is right for you, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Am I the kind of person who is self-motivated and is able to organize myself to find study time each week?
  2. Do I enjoy studying alone?
  3. Will I take responsibility for communicating with my instructors over the Internet?
  4. Do I have good reading and written communication skills as most online communications are in written form?
  5. Do I have basic computer, word-processing and Internet search skills?

If you answered "Yes" or "Usually" to these questions, online learning can be right for you! Even if you are a little apprehensive, why not start slowly by trying one course this coming semester. You may find this is the way to realize your educational goals.
